Royal Raven is a strategic trick-taking card game for four players, played in partnerships. The game is named after its distinctive Royal Raven card, which is the highest trump in play in the standard deck. The combination of bidding, trump selection, and skillful play makes Royal Raven an engaging game of strategy and teamwork.
The goal is to score points by winning tricks containing point cards. The first team to reach the target score wins the game.
All games begin with a standard deck containing 41 cards numbered 5-14 in each of four royal colors (red, yellow, purple, and blue), plus the Royal Raven card
The deck can be modified in several ways:
Played with 4 players in partnerships.
Cards are shuffled using Fisher-Yates Shuffle (or Knuth Shuffle): This is a widely accepted and efficient algorithm for producing an unbiased random permutation of a finite sequence, such as a deck of cards. It works by iterating through the cards and, for each card, swapping it with a randomly chosen card from the remaining unshuffled portion of the deck.
This simulates the traditional card cutting where you split the deck at a random point and put the bottom portion on top. It's a nice touch that adds to the "feel" of proper card handling, even though the Fisher-Yates shuffle with good randomness already gives you perfect distribution. The cut doesn't mathematically improve the randomness (the shuffle already achieved that), but it does add that authentic card game experience!
The AI deals cards in rounds: first, it gives one card to each player and the kitty, continuing this rotation until the kitty reaches its target size (5 cards for standard games, or 6 cards when playing with the Lynx). Then it distributes the remaining cards evenly among the players.
The high-bidder chooses the trump color from the four royal colors (red, yellow, purple, blue). The Lynx and Royal Raven are always trump cards regardless of the chosen trump color.
If the game option is enabled, the winning bidder may allow their partner to choose the trump color instead, but this increases their bid by 5 points.
Royal Raven can be played with different card combinations to create varied gameplay experiences:

Include 1s and Lynx |
No 1s Include Lynx |
|---|---|---|---|---|

| Cards Per Player | 9 | 10 | 10 | 9 |
| Cards in Kitty | 5 | 5 | 6 | 6 |
| Minimum Bid | 70 | 100 | 100 | 70 |
| Maximum Bid | 120 | 180 | 205 | 145 |
| Points Per Round | 120 | 180 | 205 | 145 |
| Target Score | 300 | 500 | 750 | 400 |
Royal Raven uses a sophisticated rating system that combines two components to measure player skill:
Your Player Rating is a blend of two factors:
All players start with a base rating of 1000. New players have higher rating adjustments per game to help them find their true skill level quickly.
| Tier | Rating Range |
|---|---|
| Bronze | 0 - 899 |
| Silver | 900 - 1099 |
| Gold | 1100 - 1299 |
| Platinum | 1300 - 1499 |
| Diamond | 1500+ |
When creating a game, you can choose whether it's a "Rated Game." Only rated games affect your Player Rating, ELO, and tier status. Unrated games are perfect for casual play or practice without impacting your standings.
Leaving a rated game in progress results in penalties to discourage abandonment:
Free Leaves: Players earn 1 "free leave" for every 50 games completed without abandoning (maximum 10 banked). Using a free leave avoids the penalty. If another player abandons first, you can leave without penalty.
Games that end due to a player abandoning or timer expiration award reduced rating points (50% of normal) to the remaining players, reflecting the incomplete nature of the match.
